none of these agencies should charge anything to start, and as of 1 October 2010 it will be against the law for any agency to charge upfront fees, so you might want to wait until then, as if they have fees now, you will still have to pay and will not get them refunded
HOWEVER, even if you are signed to a top agency like Storm, Select or Models 1, you will be responsible for the cost of your own comp/zed cards unless they are 100% convinced you are the next Kate Moss. You may also have to pay for a few shoots AFTER you have a contract to get your portfolio started if they don’t know any photographers willing to work TFP.
But you should NEVER pay for any portfolio shots before you have signed a contract with an agency - scam agencies will try to convince you to come in for a "free" shoot, then hit you with a £400 fee afterwards saying that while the "shoot" was free, you have to buy the actual photographs and there is a minimum spend
A reputable modeling agency will NEVER charge you money. They know the money they can make off you is far greater than that. If someone is asking you to pay them to get jobs, or for pictures, etc. they’re not a reputable agency.
I have a friend with Select Models and they did not charge her anything to join the agency
