How do I get into modelling?

I’ve had lots of people come up to me and ask if I model. I’ve always been kind of shy about my looks. But last year, a modelling agency contacted me. My mom wouldn’t let me go. But I think that it would be fun and a good way to boost my self esteem a little.
I have some experience. My grandpa is a professional photographer and I model for his photoshoots alot. I’ve modelled for his photography class twice, too.

  2. By saying your mom wouldn’t let you, I’m guessing you’re not 18, which I know 1st hand complicates things. I model now though and so can you. First you have to not be shy about your looks, you need to be self confident. Confidence is key in the modeling industry, besides looks. As a model your job is to sell clothes, in order to do so you have to be confident in your body and yourself. If not it’ll show. You also need to be able how to act. How to put on facial expressions such as sad, motherly, surprised, happy, angry, anxious, curious, dazed, etc. Once you’ve got this down consider your options. Are you tall enough for runway or do you just want to do print work? Then talk to your mom, let her know your serious about this. Get your grandpa to take a few head shots and full body photos. Then try to find an agency nearby. Watch out for online, scams! I attended a modeling school which did teach me about runway but got me nowhere in the end. If your mom isn’t supportive of modeling, it’s kinda impossible for now, considering she’d have to drive you, sign, etc. But when you turn 18, move to a bigger city, or contact agencies. If you have any questions about runway or print work, advice, etc. I’d be glad to answer. The start is always the hardest, but you seem like you really want it, so I think you’ll do fine if you commit. ( ps. I’m not 18 yet either , in high school, and my mom wasn’t for it at 1st either) Good luck! :)

  4. Well, of course never pay a place, its a waste of money, i started free. and am locally successful. Im in dallas tx, my 3 yr old daughter also models and were happy with the bookings we do get. Contact a local agency, and they will ask for a head shot, a full body shot and a mid shot from just abve your head to your waiste, send pics of you in a plain fitted white tee, feminine not boobs hanging out, but showing your figure, no updos with your hair, wear hair as natural as possible, nothing in it, unless of course your hair is untamable, no make up, or only mascara, they like everything as natural as possible so if they have to do any changes such as rosier cheeks, or straighten or curly up your hair, they can see what there starting with… Modeling is fun, but keep in mind youu wont get every job you go on a gosee to, cause your body type no matter what it is might not be what they are looking for at that time, but as always respect them, and they may use you for a anohter booking…….. Never go to a hotel thing "calling all models" non sense, just go to the center… right to the agency… works out best, just google modeling agencies in your cities closest to you, in dallas its kim dawson…. good luck

  6. If you are shy you are going to need to get over that before you even think of going into any agency. Modeling does NOT boost your self esteem - it normally rips it apart. Why do you think there are so many stories of models with drug and alcohol problems, eating disorders, suicide attempts, etc — these do not affect people who confident. If you are shy you are going to be eaten alive. Shyness shows up in your body language and you’ll never stand out at a go-see.

If you are not 200% confident and thick skinned going in, then how are you going to survive going to 100 go-sees for every 1 job you get booked on? How are you going to deal with agents or casting directors telling you constantly that you are too tall/short/plain/exotic/ugly/thin lipped/fat/skinny/big nosed/small busted/etc for that job? Because they can and will pick out the faults with even the most "perfect" girls when they have to justify why they picked one girl instead of the 25 others at the go-see. Nobody notices the shy girl in a room, you notice that one who is more confident than everyone else.

I would first work on overcoming your shyness. The only way to do so is to get in front of people - whether it’s joining school glee club, getting involved in school plays, speech/debate club, joining a sports team, singing solos in your church choir, etc. The more you get used to actually performing in front of others, the more you are going to overcome shyness. Until you do so, I wouldn’t go anywhere near modeling
